Okay, experiment with SPACE=(0,(0)), as you last said about it and see what are the primary and secondary allocation for data set.

Such set-ups are site-specific. Suggest you get in touch with someone at your shop.

It'd rather depend on the SMS routines at your shop...

Possibly you need to know - how was the the tape created? A tape back-up taken by ADRDSSU will not work with IDCAMS, so, how was the the tape created?

We'll pay nearly the same attention even when you write your post with default color and font size, you know!

And Sort won't work unless reuse=yes is used for the VSAM file, to be used as input and output.

Other possible ways are - IDCAMS repro or possibly you can write a COBOL program.

Suggest you show some good example of input records and the expected output from them. What is the LRECL/RECFM of input and output.

Possibly, this can be done with ICETOOL - what sort product are you using?

Are you using DFSort or SyncSort?

In case DFSort, what level of DFSort are you at?

Actually, your question is site specific. As others have also mentioned about it, there are sites where DATACLAS from SMS will come in to picture and you, as an end user, won't need to have SPACE in DCB but at other sites this is a necessity. Yours seem to fall in later category.
