How we will be know a job abend.
is there any blinking in screen?

scenario 1 - In JCL job card , if NOTIFY contains either &SYSUID or your mainframe id. you submiited that job.

At the end of the job, one red color line will be displayed on top of the screen with the information ( may be abended or executed sucessfully). after you type enter, it will goes off.

scenario 2 - If job executed by CA-7 or Executed by some other guys

you need to go to spool and check the status of the job.

In production support, normally, programmers will use CA-7 commands to moniter if any jobs are abended.

In some companies, production support guy get a page when a job abended.
