career growth and future of mainframe engineers

recently i got placement in a top IT company. The stream that they offered me is Mainframe. I went through internet about mainframe future prospects. Most of the sites gave a negative remark and tagged it as a dying field. I am really confused.Please guide me and tell me the exact condition of mainframe in the current IT world and the likely fate of all mainframe engineers

I have been happily employed working on the mainframe for over 40 years.

something like 98 out of the fortune 100 companies run their mission critical stuff on the mainframe. A huge percentage of the world's financial transactions take place on the mainframe.

The biggest problem with the mainframe is that management too often gets their infornation from uninformed or biased sources on the internet and in airline magazines. These sources have been telling them that the mainframe is dead for the last 20 years. COBOL was supposed to have died 40 years ago.

As people like me retire, the demand for people with mainframe skills will only increase, as there are too few places training our replacements.
