difference between 'version' and 'generation' in gdg

what is the difference between version and generation while coding gdg in jcl?
I am a beginner to this language. Help me

Also, consider that as an application developer, you will not use versions . . .

Also, in 40 years as an operator/data controller/production support analyst/operations analyst/programmer etc I have never needed to use a "version". I have only done so in self-education.
