Define public sector. Most governments would have mainframe or two in their back pockets. Procedures? What procedures? Most procedures i know of vary from place to place. Ergo preparing is just knowing your technicals.

Most large organizations (public or private) have mainframes.

This is not something you simply prepare for. You need to decide what you are actually interested in doing. Often formal training is available.

Unless your uncle owns the facility, it is almost impossible to walk in and tell the Human Resources people you want to work in mainframe and get hired.
Have a good one

Disclaimer: These are my own personal views and they don't represent the belief or policies of any company or entity in any way.

I'd say you've put a very open ended question - when you talk about "public sector companies", it readily calls upon the discussion on where do you belong to? What is your location?

Having spent some time in U.S. -- I know there are quite a good number of Government entities working on/with Mainframes(zOS). Having born in India and spending some time in IT, over the years, I can say - there are very few Financial Institution which make use of Mainframes(zOS) and very few of them are under the direct influence of Government.

Europe, I believe, is another good place.
