How is a Single (S) record layout is different from a XREF (

Not working on mainframe technolgy.
but , need to answer this in some quiz.

XREF is "cross-reference", when you have multiple layouts for some file, in file-aid using XREFs you can open file in different layouts from "a single scrren. While "Single" means your file has only one kind of records... not sure if it helps for your quiz... :)
