How to reduce elapse time of a job?

Can someone tell how to reduce the elapse time of a job?what are the possible ways to reduce more time consumption of a job?
Someone please advise me in this regards.Thanks in advance.

That's a very vague question. You need to give more details such as the utility you're using, type and attributes of the input and output data sets, functions being performed, etc.

Suppose if we are using CONDCODE step which is taking more time, we can change it with SORT step which saves more time.But if a COBOL program is taking more time ,is there any possible way to reduce the time:?:
