career progress in mainframes

Post by ambi_mainfames » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:41 pm

i am a 2+ experienced mainframes professional. my project involves most of the task related to jcl, vsam and cobol. the tasks on db2 is comparitively lesser. I wish to do some certifications or specialise in some tools which is widely in demand in the market.

the certifications/tools can be anything which is in a way specialising the fields which i mostly work i my project(vsam, jcl, cobol). pls suggest me some.

As per my knowledge, most of the mainframe programmer normally go for DB2 certifiation. i did not come across any certificatrions on VSAM and JCL. Certification on COBOL may be provided by brain bench.

Hi,

Brain Bench provides certifcation in JCL as well - but, per me, JCL is to trivial to be opted for certification.

This
the certifications/tools can be anything ..
is actually an immature sentence (pardon my rudeness..if it's in anyway). You must know what do you want to do before spending your time on that - shooting without any aim would give you a definite failure !

Anuj

Hello again,

COBOL Certifications - as it turns out, there are only two that I could find. The first is from Brainbench; the second is from Expertrating.com. Brainbench requires a single online exam that costs $50. Expertrating.com suggests a series of 18 online exams for COBOL developers which range in price from free to $25. Each exam constitutes a certification in itself.

Although there are not a lot of COBOL Certifications, there are a wide range of resources on the net to get you started or to hone your expertise. For example, COBUG offers a good list of online tutorials.

For VSAM I'll try to find, if I could - I'll post back.
Regards,
Anuj
