redefines

not what you meant.

Hi Dick,

Thanks for the reply. I could understand the concepts but I don't have hands on Mainframe experience. It would be great if u cud explain me with the real time scenario. Also, I am new to the mainframe and yet to work on the project. Kindly help me for the same.

What does this mean? Perhaps 'you could'?
Remember that you are addressing professionals here - not the kid next door.

Why not get a free COBOL compiler for your PC and practice these things?

Hi Dick,

Sorry for the mistake. I never meant like as Nic mentioned above.

Hi Nic,

Thanks for your kind suggestions. I never thought like that the people here are kids and knew that they are professionals. I was asking help from them, as I'm new to this Mainframe technology. I am very happy to get guided by you professionals here. My questions may be too simple to professionals like you but I'm just stepping into the Mainframe technology, so kindly correct me and guide me in your valuable time. It will be much helpful for my career.
Kindly suggest me a free COBOL compiler.

The 3 I have came with books, a long time ago. I sometimes Google 'free cobol compilers' but I have never downloaded another. Look and see if something takes your fancy.

Nic

Or look in the COBOL manuals for the IBM Mainframe compiler - there are examples in the manual.
Have a good one

If compiler is what you want - download the zCOBOL Cobol-compiler. Which is available as part of the z390 open source portable mainframe assembler for Windows or Linux starting with z390 v1.5.00. It's written uisng JVM (Java Virtual Machine) - I've not used it but I'm working with Assembler emulatoer of it and have not experimented much with it.

Hi Anuj,

Thanks for the reply. I have started my career as PMO before 1 year and moving to Mainframe technology now. Kindly guide me to proceed further. I have read the JCL and COBOL documents provided in this site. I can understand the basics theoriticaly but didn't get a chance to work on the mainframe environment.

You are taking your thread in a very differnt direction and it's getting very subjective now. When you say "moving to Mainframe technology", what exactly should I percieve from it?

Did you get in to a Project where you are supposed to work on zOS? Are you to increase your knowledge about zOS, in general and not actually working as of now? You've already tried something with COBOL REDEFINEs and it does not work the way you thought of?
Regards,
Anuj
