Hi,

A production job is abending randomly due to sort capacity issue. Sometimes it works fine on restart and sometimes we need to manually increase the sort work files. When i tried creating the same scenario in test using the prod files which caused the abend , the job ran fine. As a result , i am not able to recreate the prod abend scenario in test and not able to understand why the job which abended due to space issue sometimes runs fine with simple restart and sometimes requires change in sort work files.

Below is the job step which is failing:
//STEP40 EXEC PGM=SORT,
// PARM='MSGPRT=ALL,FILSZ=E200000'
//*
//SYSOUT DD SYSOUT=*
//SORTIN DD DSN=INPUT.FILE1,
// DISP=SHR,
// DCB=BUFNO=20
// DD DSN=INPUT.FILE2,
// DISP=SHR,
// DCB=BUFNO=20
//*
//SORTOUT DD DSN=OUTPUT.FILE,
// DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE),
// UNIT=VTAPE,VOL=(,,,99),
// SPACE=(106,(100,20),RLSE),AVGREC=K,
// DCB=(RECFM=FB,LRECL=106,BLKSIZE=0,BUFNO=20)
//SYSIN DD *
//*
//SORTWK01 DD UNIT=DISK,SPACE=(106,(100,20),RLSE),AVGREC=K
//SORTWK02 DD UNIT=DISK,SPACE=(106,(100,20),RLSE),AVGREC=K
//SORTWK03 DD UNIT=DISK,SPACE=(106,(100,20),RLSE),AVGREC=K
//SORTWK04 DD UNIT=DISK,SPACE=(106,(100,20),RLSE),AVGREC=K
//*

Below is the complete error message from spool:

I think DFSORT in this situation will ignore your estimated file size, but why chose E200000 for a file with 1.8m+ records?

I'd suggest you use dynamic sortwork allocation rather than specifying the DDs.

Is the source on tape? If not, why that blocksize, which would be very inefficient for DASD.

When posting the sysout from a step, please include all the error-message prefixes.

Please use the Code tags to preserve spacing, and don't then attempt to bold or otherwise highlight the text.

Hi William,

Thank u for ur suggestions n d quick reply..actually this JCL was coded
15 yrs back n the source file is in Tape..
Also I noticed tht the same job is running fine in test using the same
prod files as a result m not able to recreate the abend scenario n find a solution.
I am not able to understand why is the job running fine after a simple
restart in prod n runs without abending in test region?

The amount of workspace actually available to one JOB varies depending on what other JOBs are running at the time.

Have a look at the substantial section "Allocation of work data sets" in Appendix A of the DFSORT Application Programming Guide as a starting point. If you want to stick with JCL allocation (DDs for SORTWKn files) then ensure that there is sufficient primary space in the allocation.
